Visa holder loan FAQs

Common questions from visa holders applying for a loan through Lending Room.

Can't find what you're looking for? Contact our team

What visa types do you accept? +

We accept open work visas and employer-specific work visas. Your visa must have at least 13 months remaining at the time of your application. Student visas, visitor visas and working holiday visas are not accepted.

Will applying affect my credit score? +

We run a soft credit check during our assessment which does not appear on your credit file or affect your score. Once we match you to a lender, some accept our soft check while others may run their own standard credit check as part of their process. We will let you know before we submit.

Do I need to be employed to apply? +

Yes. You must have regular NZ-based employment income paid into a NZ bank account. We are not able to help visa holders who are self-employed, on a benefit or without verifiable NZ income.

What can I use the loan for? +

Personal loans for visa holders can be used for most purposes including car purchase, home renovation, debt consolidation, medical costs and more. Tell us what you need the loan for and we will match you to the most suitable lender.

How much can I borrow? +

The minimum is $3,000 and the maximum is $250,000 depending on the lender and your personal circumstances. Loan terms range from 6 to 84 months.

My visa expires in less than 13 months. Can I still apply? +

Unfortunately not at this stage. Lenders on our panel require a minimum of 13 months remaining on your visa. If you are in the process of renewing your visa, apply once the renewal is confirmed and your new expiry date is at least 13 months away.

Is there a fee to use Lending Room? +

A broker and introducer fee of up to $1,500 applies when your loan is successfully funded. This fee is added to your loan amount and is GST inclusive. It is disclosed clearly before you commit to anything and you are never under obligation to proceed. Lender establishment fees may also apply depending on the lender.

What our customers say

5.0

Rated 5 out of 5 on Trustpilot

Can visa holders get a personal loan in NZ?

Yes. Personal loans are available to visa holders in New Zealand, though not all lenders accept non-residents. Many mainstream banks decline visa holder applications outright, and those that do accept them may offer limited products or less competitive rates. Specialist non-bank lenders are generally more willing to work with employed visa holders who have a stable income and a good credit history.

Lending Room works with lenders on our panel who specifically cater for visa holders. We match you to the lender most suited to your visa type, employment situation and loan purpose, giving you access to options that may not be available if you apply directly.

What visa types are accepted?

Lenders on our panel accept open work visas and employer-specific work visas. Your visa must have at least 13 months remaining at the time of application. This requirement reflects the lender's need to ensure the loan can be serviced for a reasonable period before visa renewal becomes a consideration.

Open work visas

Open work visas allow you to work for any employer in NZ. These are generally viewed favourably by lenders as they are not tied to a specific employer, reducing the risk of income disruption if your employment situation changes.

Employer-specific work visas

Employer-specific visas are tied to a particular employer. These are accepted by lenders on our panel provided your visa has at least 13 months remaining and your employment is stable and verifiable through payslips or bank statements.

Visas not accepted

Student visas, visitor visas and working holiday visas are not accepted at this stage. If your visa is in the process of renewal, apply once the renewal is confirmed and your new expiry date is at least 13 months away.

One application through Lending Room reaches lenders who specifically accept visa holders. We run one soft credit check that does not affect your score.

What can a visa holder use a personal loan for in NZ?

Visa holder loans can be used for the same range of purposes as standard personal loans. This includes car purchases, home renovation, debt consolidation, medical and dental costs, travel and general personal expenses. Tell us what you need the loan for and we will match you to the lender best suited to your purpose and profile.

How to apply for a loan as a visa holder in NZ

Applying as a visa holder through Lending Room takes about five minutes. You will need your passport (not a NZ driver licence alone), your visa details including visa type, number and expiry date, three months of bank statements showing your regular income paid into a NZ bank account, and details of any existing loans or debts.

We run a soft credit check during our assessment which does not affect your score. We then match you to the lender on our panel most suited to your situation and contact you with your options the same day in most cases. You are under no obligation to proceed until you are happy with the offer.
